Featured Review from The Onion A.V. Club
April 23, 2011Though people invariably peg Ted Leo’s songwriting as “literary” and “political” above all, his dense tangles of English only serve to fuel his scorched-earth campaign to rescue pop and punk by way of positive attack. more at avclub.com

Featured Review from TimeOutChicago
April 27, 2011Schubas favorite Bobby Bare Jr. is coming off a great year featuring not one but two knockout records: Twistable, Turnable Man (a Shel Silverstein tribute album produced by Bare and his father) and A Storm, A Tree, My Mother’s Head (his strongest solo disc yet).

Featured Review from The Onion A.V. Club
April 13, 2011Chicago’s Cameron McGill has always had a way of distinguishing himself from the very crowded twangy end of the singer-songwriter spectrum, and that’s become more and more of a plus as his songwriting has matured. more at avclub.com

Featured Review from Oh My Rockness
April 23, 2011DC’s Jukebox the Ghost are an extremely entertaining piano-pop trio that writes cleverly optimistic songs. Their music gives off an aura that vaguely resembles happiness. Imagine!

April 13, 2011March’s mini-tour with Baths had Canadian four-piece Gobble Gobble donning tutus and fairy wings as it churned out one spastic, synthed-out dance hit after another. more at avclub.com

April 20, 2011Amazing German pianist-composer Hauschka returns with his arsenal of odds and ends (gaffer tape, bottle caps, Ping-Pong balls, magnets, etc.). He’s touting a transfixing new album, Salon des Amateurs, which mixes classical with techno and house influences.

Joan Wasser is still best known for being the dreadlocked violinist in The Dambuilders, a mostly overlooked ’90s college-rock band that typified the era in both sound and attitude.more at avclub.com

Featured Review from Oh My Rockness
April 13, 2011Most music videos that are “funny” aren’t really that funny. Jamaica’s “I Think I Like U 2” video is the exception. That video is funny. It chronicles the Paris pop duo’s rise (and fall) to superstardom as they take over the world with their catchy choruses. It’s all tongue-in-cheek of course, since no one has ever really heard of Jamaica. Yet. more at ohmyrockness.com

Featured Review from Oh My Rockness
April 13, 2011L.A.‘s The Submarines are an indie-pop duo comprised of John Dragonetti (he sometimes sings and plays the guitar) and Blake Hazard (she sings most of the time and strikes up the synths). Together, the romantic on-again-off-again-on-again couple layers a bunch of lush, lo-fi electro melodies to create a warm, sugary sound that falls somewhere alongside Canada’s Stars and Illinois’ Headlights (who happen to be their current tour mates). more at ohmyrockness.com

April 16, 2011The scrappy New Zealand quartet Surf City kicks up a frenzied, if slightly familiar-sounding dust on their eponymous EP (2008) and debut full-length, Kudos (Fire, 2010). more at flavorpill.com

Featured Review from Oh My Rockness
April 13, 2011New Zealand’s Surf City is getting such big buzz that the hype has made its way halfway around the world. It’s the right sound at the right time perhaps? These four guys find themselves smack in the middle of the lo-fi-fuzz craze. Back-to-the-basics bands like No Age and HEALTH and WAVVES have been making the concert kids scream for this decades old sound. more at ohmyrockness.com
