Featured Review from TimeOutChicago
May 24, 2011The U.K.’s Friendly Fires is an indie-disco band that sounds somewhat like a cross between Bush Tetras and Pylon—only happier, poppier and a lot more British. more at timeoutchicago.com

Featured Review from The Onion A.V. Club
May 20, 2011Friendly Fires may fit in with the current spate of exhausting electro-pop groups, but the British band is armed with a depth of range and eager sensibility that portend a more enduring career.more at avclub.com

Featured Review from TimeOutChicago
May 24, 2011A contemporary Rosetta Stone connecting several strains of hard rock, the Melvins have inspired countless acts, whether they realize it or not. Those needing a reminder of the group’s impact would be well-served by checking out the West Coast band’s two-night stand. more at timeoutchicago.com

Featured Review from The Onion A.V. Club
May 20, 2011Like a fine wine, Melvins only get better with age: The sludge sweetens, the riffage blackens, and King Buzzo’s hair grows more frightening. more at avclub.com

Featured Review from The Onion A.V. Club
May 14, 2011Diddy may have taken her under his wing, but don’t lump Janelle Monáe in with his litter of Making The Band runts. For one thing, she has more in common stylistically with eccentric hip-hop dandy André 3000. For another, she’s an android. Rather, her alter ego, Cindi Mayweather, is.more at avclub.com

Featured Review from TimeOutChicago
May 24, 2011England’s been producing young, soulful female hopefuls at a shocking rate, but among the class that includes Duffy, Ellie Goulding and actual former classmates Leona Lewis and Jessie J, Adele’s managed to gain the most traction in America since Amy Winehouse (who, sorry, we currently include among the hopeless). more at timeoutchicago.com

May 19, 2011Swedish pop artists are once again warming mainstream America’s hearts, and Lykke Li is among the best of the bunch: Though she doesn’t craft melodies as indelible as ABBA’s (who does?), she inherited that famous foursome’s idea of pop as a place for stylistic dress-up. Her latest, Wounded Rhymes, is another crystalline example of Li’s enchanting, minimal pop. more at timeoutchicago.com

Featured Review from Oh My Rockness
May 14, 2011Sweden’s Lykke Li is young twenty-something who is quickly becoming very popular. And it’s not because she’s cute like (a young) Debbie Harry and has a cool shock-of-blonde haircut. It’s because Lykke sings sweet, sometimes almost saccharine, indie-pop with subtle dance hooks that instantly get stuck in your head (for better or worse).more at ohmyrockness.com

Featured Review from TimeOutChicago
May 19, 2011Over the years, the Sea and Cake’s consistency and prolific pace led many to take it for granted, but while the band’s subtle adventurousness may be a known quantity, one shouldn’t underestimate its ability to surprise. more at timeoutchicago.com

Featured Review from Oh My Rockness
May 14, 2011Ah, the Sea and Cake. I have such a soft spot in my heart for these easy-going Chicagoans who are surprisingly still popping along after all these years. Taking a little of Yo La Tengo’s lo-fi melodies, and adding a little bit of their own laid-back lounge, they were the purveyors of an entirely new, carefree sound. The band never met a distortion pedal they liked. more at ohmyrockness.com

Featured Review from TimeOutChicago
May 19, 2011No doubt Justin Timberlake initially stole a lot of Usher’s thunder, seeing as the two certainly share a similar métier. But to his credit, Usher’s kept pushing, despite several personal and public setbacks, to where he currently has a firm grip on superstar status. more at timeoutchicago.com

Featured Review from Oh My Rockness
May 14, 2011The key to understanding the popularity of Death Cab for Cutie is in the voice. Ben Gibbard’s voice is as clear as, well, crystal. His impeccable pitch (I don’t believe that guy has hit a sharp or flat note in his life) and impeccable tone coupled with his storybook lyrics set Death Cab apart from their many contemporaries.more at ohmyrockness.com

Featured Review from The Onion A.V. Club
May 14, 2011Despite multi-instrumentalist/producer Chris Walla’s pronouncements to the contrary, Death Cab For Cutie’s last record, Narrow Stairs, wasn’t all that much of a curveball. It was, to date, the band’s most rock-oriented record—much more so than its predecessor, Plans. Both those records, along with a little ditty written for The Twilight Saga: New Moon, launched Death Cab into semi-serious mass-market fame. more at avclub.com

May 09, 2011This band isn’t messing around. LA’s The Airborne Toxic Event sounds like U2 meets Arcade Fire meets Neil Diamond (they get compared to The Cure too, but I don’t really hear that as much. Definitely Diamond though).more at ohmyrockness.com

May 12, 2011Donald Glover brings his unique mix of “stand-up, music and general dopeness” to Chicago to promote Childish Gambino, his rapper alter ego that got the name from a Wu-Tang Clan name generator. more at flavorpill.com

May 09, 2011“What is a Childish Gambino, great-grandmother?” your relatives will one day ask. “Well,” you will say, “there was this comedian Donald Glover—you know him from his role in the first 27 seasons of Community . He decided to launch a rap side project, just like Bill Cosby…”more at timeoutchicago.com

Featured Review from Chicago Reader
May 14, 2011Kelley Stoltz is one hell of a mimic. His latest album, last year’s To Dreamers (Sub Pop), kicks off with some power chords that channel the Who so perfectly you’ll want to smash your air guitar by the end of the first verse. Other songs emulate the finer moments of the Go-Betweens, Tom Petty, and Ziggy-era David Bowie. more at chicagoreader.com

May 12, 2011Great masses of 1980s goths and post-punks were utterly defenseless against Echo & the Bunnymen’s triple threat: gloomy romanticism, catchy neo-psychedelia, and singer Ian McCulloch’s oh-so-pouty lips. more at flavorpill.com

May 09, 2011Spinning Paul Simon’s new album, So Beautiful or So What , you’re quickly reminded: “Wait a minute—this guy is a pop star.” That is to say, not just a prescient urban-folk bard and boomer hero but an actual hit maker. more at timeoutchicago.com
