WindyCityRock on Indie-Pendent Thursday - PET LIONS (LIVE SET) @ Debonair Social Club

Pet Lions' Houses is the sound of a risk paying off. Listen to the Chicago quartet's first LP back to back with their 2009 introductory EP Soft Right, and it's clear that over the past two years they have been working to push their music into deeper and more adventurous places. While the EP was centered around generally straightforward indie pop, Houses introduces an artier, more atmospheric twist. full album review at Windy City Rock

WindyCityRock on The Island of Misfit Toys, The Hudson Branch, Warren Franklin @ Schubas

The Island of Misfit Toys take that teenage impulse to pour all our rage into a four-track in the basement, then inflate it to a full-band sound. Bear Hair is raw, but it's also confident, occasionally self-amused, and delightfully successful in what it aims to achieve--a world filled with equal parts feeling and playfulness. WindyCityRock on Denise Hradecky, Brice Woodall, and more! @ Abbey Pub

Holy double release show! If you're like me and want to duck out of the way of the P4K crowd (hipster swarms of doom!) but still want to spend this weekend enjoying some great live music, you ought to kick things off by heading up to the Abbey Pub this Friday. Brice Woodall and Denise Hradecky will both be releasing sweet new records there, and I have good information that says you'll be able to pick up 7 inch vinyl to add to your growing collection, you trendsetter, you. more at Windy City Rock

WindyCityRock on Pitchfork Music Festival - Day 3 @ Union Park

Oh my. Seems like only yesterday everyone was speculating on who would play Pitchfork Music Festival this year. Recent BNM hunnies like Odd Future and James Blake seemed obvious, vets like Guided by Voices and Thurston Moore were superb additions; there were a quite a few artists already familiar to past festival-goers (AnCo, Fleet Foxes, Cut Copy…) and I’ll save my gripes against the webzine for not including more local talent. Alas, the time has come where speculation ends and experience begins. With a myriad of bands and other activities, it’s hard to stick with any plan for the weekend. So here’s a loose schedule to maybe possibly sort of follow...more at Windy City Rock

WindyCityRock on Wild Flag, Mickey, Radar Eyes @ Subterranean

Mickey is five guys from here in Chicago who have just released a debut record titled Rock N' Roll Dreamer on Hozac Records. The LP is a revved-up glam-garage hybrid over 10 tracks and about 28 minutes, packed with enough raucous energy and buzz-saw guitar to make you want to jump up and thrash around uncontrollably wherever you are. WindyCityRock on Brontosaurus, Color Radio, The Soil and The Sun @ Empty Bottle

Chicago duo Brontosaurus make plenty of sound for just two people. And not in the same sense that White (Stripes/Mystery) make high volumes of noise, although that, too, is an impressive feat. The songs on Brontosaurus's debut album are thick, impressively woven worlds; dark, intricate, and indeed full of feeling. Full review at Windy City Rock

WindyCityRock on Lollapalooza - Day 3 @ Grant Park

There's plenty of bands here in Chicago worthy of playing Lollapalooza, but there's only a few selected for the lineup every year. Here's a roundup of some of the Windy City acts you can plan to see at Lolla 2011
