Featured Review from Oh My Rockness
July 30, 2012Bloc Party are a little less dandy than Franz Ferdinand, but you can still dance to them if you want. more at ohmyrockness.com

Featured Review from Oh My Rockness
July 30, 2012With two near-perfect albums under their New Mexican belts, it would be understandable for The Shins to want some time to roll around drunk and naked in their money, feeling the softness of benjamins caressing their bums. more at ohmyrockness.com

Featured Review from The Onion A.V. Club
January 24, 2012It’s easy to write off Chicago-bred Rise Against as just another quasi-political punk band that hit it big after signing to the majors. more at avclub.com

SOLD OUT: Arctic Monkeys w/ Disappears
Sat. 08/06 | 10:00PM (Doors) @ House of Blues (map)
-
Featured Review from TimeOutChicago
August 02, 2011The blinding hype surrounding the debut of the Arctic Monkeys briefly made it seem as if their youth and talent would doom the Brits to failure. But anchored by Alex Turner’s witty songs, the group’s long since shown up its doubters and detractors. more at timeoutchicago.com

Featured Review from TimeOutChicago
August 02, 2011L.A. combo Fitz and the Tantrums headlines a Lolla after-party with deliciously shuffly, crisply authentic ’60s beat pop. Husky-voiced “Jar of Hearts” singer-songwriter Christina Perri does her emoto-pop thing in support. more at timeoutchicago.com

SOLD OUT: Two Door Cinema Club w/ Grouplove
Sat. 08/06 | 10:00PM (Doors) @ Lincoln Hall (map)
-
Featured Review from TimeOutChicago
August 02, 2011Two Door Cinema Club, a trio of pimple-faced Northern Ireland kids, has stumbled upon a hyperactive form of soft rock. Singer Alex Trimble’s slight voice might be better suited to soppy emo, but give the kid credit for avoiding the Owl City ghetto. more at timeoutchicago.com

Featured Review from TimeOutChicago
August 02, 2011Swedish pop artists are once again warming mainstream America’s hearts, and Lykke Li is among the best of the bunch: Though she doesn’t craft melodies as indelible as ABBA’s (who does?), she inherited that famous foursome’s idea of pop as a place for stylistic dress-up. more at timeoutchicago.com

Featured Review from TimeOutChicago
August 02, 2011Denver husband-and-wife duo Tennis plies what could be easily described as Polaroid pop. The group’s songs suggest sunny, vibrant snapshots of ’60s rock and girl-group proclivities, marrying Alaina Moore’s vivid vocals to warm-sounding organs and guitars. more at timeoutchicago.com

SOLD OUT: Tinie Tempah, Young The Giant
Fri. 08/05 | 10:00PM (Doors) @ Subterranean (map)
-
Featured Review from TimeOutChicago
August 02, 2011This Lollapalooza after-party features U.K. MC Tinie Tempah, who flaunts a very radio-friendly staccato flow on songs like “Pass Out,” which hit No. 1 in his home country. That led to an opening slot on the Usher OMG tour, and he tries to further validate the hype stateside tonight. more at timeoutchicago.com

Featured Review from TimeOutChicago
August 02, 2011The Canadian noise-pop duo Death from Above 1979 put out only one proper album, 2004’s You’re a Woman, I’m a Machine, which was given a pretty significant amount of attention from indie press. more at timeoutchicago.com

SOLD OUT: Delta Spirit w/ Reptar
Thu. 08/04 | 8:00PM (Doors) @ Lincoln Hall (map)
-
Featured Review from TimeOutChicago
August 02, 2011San Diego’s Delta Spirit can sound a lot like a band it has opened for, Cold War Kids. But it sees Cold War Kids’ wager and doubles down: The group’s songs aren’t preoccupied with a need to be overly catchy, and it explores dark, spare moments while constructing touching epics. more at timeoutchicago.com

Featured Review from TimeOutChicago
August 02, 2011The rapid ascent of Cold Wars Kids may have raised a few suspicious eyebrows, but the band seems to have taken success in stride. Catch the Cali outfit in advance of Lollapalooza at tonight’s Nelarusky fund-raiser, benefiting the Special Olympics. more at timeoutchicago.com

Featured Review from WindyCityRock
July 15, 2011Oh my. Seems like only yesterday everyone was speculating on who would play Pitchfork Music Festival this year. Recent BNM hunnies like Odd Future and James Blake seemed obvious, vets like Guided by Voices and Thurston Moore were superb additions; there were a quite a few artists already familiar to past festival-goers (AnCo, Fleet Foxes, Cut Copy…) and I’ll save my gripes against the webzine for not including more local talent. Alas, the time has come where speculation ends and experience begins. With a myriad of bands and other activities, it’s hard to stick with any plan for the weekend. So here’s a loose schedule to maybe possibly sort of follow…more at Windy City Rock

Featured Review from The Onion A.V. Club
July 06, 2011Fleet Foxes and Zola Jesus and DJ Shadow and Twin Shadow and The Dismemberment Plan and The Radio Dept. and Destroyer and OFF! and No Age and Wild Nothing and Gang Gang Dance and G-Side and Cold Cave and Sun Airway and Julianna Barwick
Some of the most talked-about newcomers in recent years, Fleet Foxes lived up to the hype by delivering an excellent debut album that was matched (or, some might say, exceeded) by their amazing live shows and knee-buckling multipart harmonies. more at avclub.com
