Erykah Badu

Neo-soul queen Erykah Badu’s first album, Baduizm, not only signaled the multi-platinum arrival of an auspicious R&B talent, it earned her a 1997 Grammy for Best R&B Album, and the single “On and On” nabbed her a Best Female R&B Vocal Performance Grammy. She’s since earned two more golden gramophones for her smooth vocals and inventive tunes. Her one-take video for “Window Seat”, a song from her new album, New Amerykah Part Two: Return of the Ankh, shot March 13, 2010 at the infamous Dealey Plazaósite of President Kennedy’s assassination featured her disrobing, then falling down, nude, as a shot rings out. Her nudity, pixilated onscreen, and choice of location earned her reams of print, electronic and blogosphere chatter, and a disorderly conduct citation after one bystander filed an official complaint.
Badu, however, has never been afraid to be bold. With her smooth R&B voice and poetic lyrics, she sometimes examines controversial subjects; this one, she said, was a shot against “groupthink”. Badu, who has collaborated with several top hip-hop artists, has a son with Andre 3000 of Outkast, a daughter with rapper the D.O.C., and another daughter with rapper Jay Electronica. Her Dallas charity, Beautiful Love Inc. Non-profit Development, gives inner-city kids opportunities to explore visual and performing arts.

Featured Review from Chicago Reader
March 30, 2012Erykah Badu has had an enviable career—early smashes like “On and On” and “Bag Lady” allowed her to bank enough goodwill with listeners and labels alike to finance expeditions into the fringes of pop music, far from the coffee-shop neosoul that made her big. more at chicagoreader.com

Featured Review from TimeOutChicago
April 20, 2011In 2008’s New Amerykah Part One (4th World War), society was on the brink. Pieced together largely on a laptop, that trippy, paranoid platter crackled like an emergency broadcast from 1977, echoing Farrakhan, Black Panther Party politics and Howard Beale’s manic Network rant for a new recession.

April 13, 2011Erykah Badu garnered a lot of attention earlier last year when she stripped naked on the streets of Dallas for her “Window Seat” video. (Badu confessed on her Twitter feed that it was “shot guerilla style…then [we] ran like hell.”) more at avclub.com

Featured Review from Chicago Reader
May 28, 2010New Amerykah Part Two: Return of the Ankh (Motown), the second album in Erykah Badu’s Amerykah trilogy, is supposedly the airing of her vulnerable, unknowable id—the flipside of the polemical, assured ego we heard on her kinda-comeback, New Amerykah Part One: 4th World War. more at www.chicagoreader.com
