Amy Schumer shot to the forefront of the comedy scene as the stand-out of Comedy Central’s Roast of Charlie Sheen. She has performed on Last Comic Standing, 30 Rock, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Conan, The View, appeared on The Howard Stern Show, and was featured in The New York Times, Wall Street Journal and as Variety’s Top 10 Comics to Watch this past year. She recurred on this season’s Delocated on Adult Swim and guest starred in the latest season of Curb Your Enthusiasm. This year she filmed the feature Seeking a Friend for the End of the World starring Steve Carrell and Kiera Knightley and Price Check, an independent feature opposite Parker Posey which premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. Her album Cutting, which in its opening week placed in the top 5 of the Billboard Charts, has been included on multiple Best Comedy Albums of the Year awards lists.

Her comedy embraces a friendly, conversational tone that makes it all the more shocking—and funny—when she suddenly veers into a taboo area or attacks a member of her audience before skillfully segueing back into more relaxed, easygoing material. Schumer smartly exploits the contrast between her mock-ditsy persona and the exquisitely worded nastiness of her material on her debut album, Cutting—No. 9 on The A.V. Club’s list of the best comedy albums of 2011—which would ring false if not so finely crafted. It’s an impressive album for any comic, much less such a relatively green one. more at avclub.com
