Difficult to categorize, Grimes music has been described by Tastemaker Magazine as an “alien love-child of Aphex Twin and ABBA.” Grimes herself – born Claire Boucher – explains how she makes music as being about “finding a perfect beat, getting a tempo I like, then filling in the blanks.” Frequently used instruments include keyboards and synthesizers, sometimes accompanied by drums and the occasional guitar. Mix in a little looping and layering, sometimes with up to fifty vocal tracks, and the result is an often “ethereal” sound unlike anything you’ve ever heard. With musical influences including Nine Inch Nails, Beyonce, the “medieval” genre, and Skinny Puppy anything can be expected from this young Vancouver native. Her February 2012 release Visions from 4AD Records was listed in the Best New Music category by Pitchfork Media and many of its tracks have received favorable reviews from around the world. At the young age of 24 it seems Grimes is just getting started.
