A.D. (After Disco) v5 w/ Nathan Drew Larsen, Yazi the DJ, Adulture, Just.One.Duran
Exploring a decade in House music 1979-89… & future forward.
It was a publicity stunt gone awry, backlash from years of commercialized dance music. Steve Dahl’s infamous Disco Demolition Night (July 12, 1979) may have marked the end of an era to some, but Disco lived on in the ‘underground’ –thriving in fact– eventually finding a new voice as House music. Forced to continually evolve with the times and technology, House music’s rich history is based in a struggle for creative freedom, a struggle which defines the genre to this day.
Presented by Electric Elegance and Ground Lift Media, the new monthly event series A.D. (After Disco) takes a closer listen to the tumultuous post-Demolition Night years, and celebrates the emergence and evolution of House music & culture. Every 2nd Friday, A.D. takes over Chicago’s Sub-T Lounge with a resident lineup of up-and-coming and journeyman talents including Adulture (Dust Traxx, Second City Recordings), Just.One.Duran, & Yazi the DJ. And for the July relaunch event we’re happy to welcome Nathan Drew Larsen of Fresh Meat Records, Restless Natives.
A.D. aims to invoke and inspire a movement. In the beginning there was Disco, now let’s learn about what happens After Disco…..
NATHAN DREW LARSEN BIO
Nathan Drew Larsen came-up through the Chicago loft party and warehouse scene in the mid-nighties. His emotional music is influenced by the deep house of the time, including his work with hardware synths and other machines. Nathan’s use of field recordings and effects draw from disparate forms such as motoric and psychedelica. Nathan started releasing his original music in 2000 and since then his songs and remixes have appeared on Fresh Meat Records, NRK, 20:20 Vision, Renaissance, Global Underground, Airtight, Cyclo, and Underl_ne, among other labels. His debut release on Mazi’s Gourmet Recordings, “Standing Still,” featuring the vocals of Black Pearl, is considered to be a Chicago house classic. Nathan and Mazi currently run Fresh Meat Records and Loves. Nathan’s plays live with Mazi’s Audio Soul Project and records and djs with Chicago’s Samone Roberts as Restless Natives. He is a resident guest at Justin Long’s infamous all-vinyl Dotbleep monthly at Smart Bar. His next vinyl only single featuring a remix by Tevo Howard is set for release on Fresh Meat early this fall.
