May 27, 2012“Over the course of a few LPs and singles, San Francisco trio Grass Widow expertly tapped into the studied ramshackle genius of late ‘70s female-driven post-punk and indie pop (see great moments like “Tattoo” or “Shadow” or “11 of Diamonds” or…). Still, new full-length Internal Logic sounds like the record they’ve been building toward — it bears sonic similarities to their influences, but not overly so, and it shows off more elaborate songcraft and a spectacularly purposeful delivery (the “sweet” aspects of their sound have a thrilling, worldly bite throughout). San Diego indie rockers the Soft Pack headline.”

May 26, 2012Right from this California band’s founding in 2007, when they were called the Muslims, the Soft Pack have been considered part of the garage-rock explosion of the late aughts—but the classification never suited them too well. Yes, they make guitar-based rock with a distinctively retro feel, and they project more than a little ’more at chicagoreader.com

May 31, 2012Due to some impossible-to-account-for combination of sociocultural factors, hip-hop has been knee-deep in white female rappers lately—or at least that’s the impression you’d get from those rappers’ outsize media profiles. more at chicagoreader.com

May 27, 2012“Some comics expose their private souls in their act, offering extended revelations that more closely resemble therapeutic introspection than comedy routines. Anthony Jeselnik is not one of those comedians. The former Late Night with Jimmy Fallon scribe deploys a detached, vaguely smug persona essentially as a rapid-fire joke dispensary: set ‘em up, knock ’em down, repeat 100 times over 60 minutes. Jeselnik’s economy and reserve is matched also by a supreme dedication to shock value. (“There’s absolutely no line, and if there were, I’d cross it immediately.”) He goes so far that, if you’re not offended after the fourth AIDS joke, you have little choice but to root on his brashness, sailing full speed ahead through the choppiest waters.”

Featured Review from The Onion A.V. Club
May 24, 2012Anthony Jeselnik
Anthony Jeselnik’s 2010 album, Shakespeare, paints the stand-up as a horrible human being: He cracks wise about sexually harassing his coworkers, pauses to congratulate himself on the album’s progress, and tells a story about running a smear campaign against a wheelchair-bound opponent for high school class president. (One slogan was, “Vote for Anthony: His ideas have legs.”) But the jokes are so polished, his delivery so confident, and the routines so patently absurd that it’s difficult to actually despise Jeselnik’s despicable comedic persona. He’ll give audiences another chance to though with his new special, which he’s taping at this show in Chicago. Attendees with very recognizable laughs, this is your chance at eternal recognition. more at avclub.com

Featured Review from Chicago Reader
May 26, 2012As I push into my 30s and cynicism sinks in its hooks, it’s refreshing to hear a pop-punk album that doesn’t tempt me to roll my eyes but instead makes me nostalgic for the summers of my early 20s, when I spun power-chord anthems by Screeching Weasel and the Lillingtons with the sunroof open. Cincinnati three-piece the Dopamines don’t traffic in Ramones-style hooks quite as straightforwardly as the aforementioned, but rather borrow from a mid-90s sound—think Billie Joe Armstrong’s side project Pinhead Gunpowder, a band that Dopamines bassist Jon Weiner admits has “written songs that honest to God have kept me alive.”more at chicagoreader.com
