The last time the 25 black-and-white photographs in this series appeared together was in 1979, when Bey had his first solo exhibition at the Studio Museum in Harlem. Newly acquired by the Art Institute, these portraits of Harlem residents appear with works from the museum’s permanent collection that were curated by the Chicago artist, who’s also the subject of a Renaissance Society retrospective.
