Featured Review from TimeOutChicago
August 01, 2011Little girls adore Taylor Swift, and it’s easy to see why, from the singer’s perfect curls and well-chosen outfits to the pearls of grown-up wisdom that fall from her lips (“Words can break someone into a million pieces, but they can also put them back together,” she writes). more at timeoutchicago.com

Featured Review from TimeOutChicago
May 19, 2011Swedish pop artists are once again warming mainstream America’s hearts, and Lykke Li is among the best of the bunch: Though she doesn’t craft melodies as indelible as ABBA’s (who does?), she inherited that famous foursome’s idea of pop as a place for stylistic dress-up. Her latest, Wounded Rhymes, is another crystalline example of Li’s enchanting, minimal pop. more at timeoutchicago.com

Featured Review from Oh My Rockness
May 14, 2011Sweden’s Lykke Li is young twenty-something who is quickly becoming very popular. And it’s not because she’s cute like (a young) Debbie Harry and has a cool shock-of-blonde haircut. It’s because Lykke sings sweet, sometimes almost saccharine, indie-pop with subtle dance hooks that instantly get stuck in your head (for better or worse).more at ohmyrockness.com

Featured Review from Oh My Rockness
March 04, 2011Conor Oberst put out a solid album with his band Commander Venus when he was thirteen. Thirteen!? When I was thirteen, I poured all of my creative energy into my final 8th grade project on Brazil (I have to admit, though, it was pretty cool. It was this 3D map that showed all of Brazil’s main imports and exports. more at ohmyrockness.com

March 02, 2011For Bright Eyes, see Top live shows. Saddle Creek labelmate the Mynabirds are an Omaha group that subtly pairs Motown with ‘70s singer-songwriter signifiers without copping too hard from either’s attendant clichés.more at timeoutchicago.com

Featured Review from TimeOutChicago
March 10, 2011So perhaps we should give Cold War Kids credit for going the would-be AAA route with their third album, Mine Is Yours, a wan stab at inoffensive acceptance that we suspect was made to take the group to the next level.

February 28, 2011California’s Cold War Kids have come out of nowhere. I only heard the name for the first time a couple weeks ago, and now it seems they are everywhere. Buzz sure is a swift-moving beast. I guess they’ve tapped into something with their unique indie rock with a blues bent. more at ohmyrockness.com

Featured Review from The Onion A.V. Club
February 22, 2011Much like Bonnie “Prince” Billy, singer-songwriter Sam Beam, a.k.a. Iron And Wine, gets cloaked in a lot of backwoods folk-rock mystery. Much of that is because both artists create hushed, cinematic-sounding songs that feel like they’ve grown straight out of the earth.more at avclub.com

February 20, 2011Sam Beam, also known as Iron and Wine, is clearly the greatest Miami songwriter of all time. Then again, I don’t know if I could name another Miami musician. Was Rico Suave from Miami? more at ohmyrockness.com

Featured Review from TimeOutChicago
August 27, 2010In their day, the Stooges’ albums, loud as bombs and too ahead of their time, flopped. Only junkies, punks, David Bowie and a couple of critics immediately recognized those low-selling LPs as the epitome of rock & roll. Now, they’re rightfully revered and lavishly reissued in deluxe boxed sets, as the freakishly youthful Pop and his fat and gray backing brothers play to audience sizes they could only dream of in the ’70s. more at chicago.timeout.com

Featured Review from The Onion A.V. Club
August 26, 2010Forty-plus years after the release of Fun House, and Iggy And The Stooges still wanna be your dog. The Motor City-bred punk godfathers were only together from 1967 to 1974 before a combination of David Bowie and massive amounts of heroin thwarted their rise to the top, but the group’s anarchic style, combined with Iggy Pop’s wild antics (he’s sometimes credited as the pioneer of stage diving) indelibly scarred the rock landscape. more at www.avclub.com
