Featured Review from Chicago Reader
May 11, 2012In January Alejandro Escovedo turned 61, and few rock singers have handled growing old so well. He opens his forthcoming album, Big Station (due June 5 on Fantasy), with a stomping, Stonesy burner that pokes fun at a guy who refuses to act his age—the ranting narrator of “Man of the World” staggers between machismo and impotence, singing, “You know I’m frustrated / Hot, overrated / I feel life dissipating.” Ironically, Escovedo is full of convincing swagger and soul on that song, but on the album’s other tunes he isn’t always so persuasive. more at chicagoreader.com

May 18, 2012Ontario’s PS I Love You sounds a lot like Wolf Parade. Like, kind of a lot. Maybe Wolf Parade meets Oberhofer, if you want to throw another band comparison in there for comparison’s sake.

May 14, 2012{PRETTY LIGHTS} PLC preview: Colorado has become a haven for electronic artists to emerge from, Derek Vincent Smith, the man behind the monstrous light show, and DJ name Pretty Lights was one of the first ones to make it on the map. Known for his unbelievable sampling, and soothing synth lines along with a splash of hip hop flavor, he has been making waves in the American electronic scene. Just like his music, his stage setup will also amaze, towers of lights light up the whole stage making a pretty lights concert one you will never forget. -Derek Bogseth {PLC}

Featured Review from Chicago Reader
May 18, 2012Mark Sultan is one of the busiest people in the modern garage-rock scene—he’s played in probably a hundred different bands and amassed a catalog of recordings that’s been estimated to number in the low seven digits. (These figures may not be entirely accurate.) Though he’s performed using God knows how many different stage names, he’s best known for his work under the alias BBQ, both in a duo with fellow Montreal native and former Spaceshits bandmate King Khan and as a one-man band.

Featured Review from Oh My Rockness
May 21, 2012It’s always nice to stumble upon a band that you know they know exactly what they’re doing, who aren’t just fucking around… a band that believes in craftsmanship. Stockholm, Sweden’s I Break Horses are one of those bands.

Featured Review from Oh My Rockness
May 21, 2012With a name like Langhorne Slim, you know exactly what this guy sounds like before you even hear him… gangsta hip-hop straight from the urban jungle. Actually, NYC’s Langhorne Slim, as his moniker suggests, plays old-time countrified blues with punk rock edge. He is a man seemingly from another era; a traveling old world troubadour with an acoustic guitar, banjo, harmonica and hat acting as his only luggage. This is Americana music that makes you want to stomp your feet and get wasted to. Doesn’t “Lorretta Lee Jones” just sound like the name of a great drinking song? For fans of Two Gallants, Towns Van Zandt and the Great Depression. more at ohmyrockness.com
