Featured Review from The Onion A.V. Club
July 29, 2010The Black Keys have been unfortunately saddled with frequent comparisons to that other two-piece garage band with a similar sounding name, despite boundary pushing efforts like working with producer Danger Mouse. The Keys revisit much of their own catalogue with the new record, Brothers, opening up their already established blues-rock to weirder, cheerier transgressions, successfully redefining what “classic” Black Keys can really be. more at www.avclub.com

Featured Review from The Onion A.V. Club
July 29, 2010he Walkmen have pumped out waves upon waves of big, hooky rock that scrapes at memories of ’60s garage while beating with an anguished contemporary heart. Spacious guitar effects and swirls of organ keep the songs’ intentions nice and murky, but the band has a lot to put on display—as exhibited on 2004’s transcendent Bows + Arrows and 2008’s You & Me, an album with lots of bristling, suggestive atmosphere that is both wintry and crackling-fire warm. more at www.avclub.com

Featured Review from flavorpill
July 30, 2010For all the new-found open spaces and rhythmic expansiveness on Wild Beasts’ Two Dancers (Domino, 2009), it’s still singer Hayden Thorpe’s majestic, preening falsetto that announces itself like a peacock in bovver boots. (Think Billy MacKenzie’s flamboyance plus Brett Anderson’s cocksure androgyny.) Whether filling harmonies for bassist/platooning singer Tom Fleming’s baritone or strutting out front, Thorpe’s theatrics elevate these slices of youthful hedonism to the level of high drama. more at flavorpill.com

Featured Review from The Onion A.V. Club
July 29, 2010s Edward Sharpe, former Ima Robot frontman Alex Ebert conducts an army-sized band through ensemble-style folk-pop with an emphasis on percussion. The collective’s 2009 debut album, Up From Below, revels in the sort of Woodstock-era optimism and unwashed hippie hair hootenannies that artists from Los Angeles’ Laurel Canyon have been digging at for the last few years. more at www.avclub.com

Featured Review from flavorpill
July 30, 2010Eschewing dance beats and psychedelia for a sound more reminiscent of early-‘90s alternative, Staten Island’s Cymbals Eat Guitars’ songs slowly materialize out of gauzy clouds of feedback nearly as often as they begin with a sudden cacophonous urgency, burying Joseph D’Agostino’s ferocious melodies underneath blankets of noise. It’s unabashed indie rock without any pretense of cross-genre pollination, but the quartet’s sophisticated use of non-rock elements like horns and xylophones proves their CD collections go deeper than Slanted & Enchanted. more at flavorpill.com

Featured Review from The Onion A.V. Club
July 29, 2010Canadian collective The New Pornographers is what you’d call a top-heavy band. Led by three utterly astounding singer-songwriters—A.C. Newman, Destroyer’s Dan Bejar, and the illustrious Neko Case—the outfit has made a well-deserved name as peddlers of the prickliest power-pop more at www.avclub.com

Featured Review from The Onion A.V. Club
July 29, 2010Despite having released only one full-length, 2009’s A Brief History Of Love, London’s The Big Pink is already awash in critical praise. Signed to the legendary British label 4AD, The Big Pink is made up of two multi-instrumentalists (Milo Cordell and Robbie Furze) with impressive backgrounds. more at www.avclub.com

Featured Review from The Onion A.V. Club
July 29, 2010Built on geeky obsessions, robotic dance moves, and clanging, pent-up electronic pop, Devo found an early fan in Brian Eno, who produced the group’s 1978 debut. Subsequent hits like “Whip It” haven’t left the cultural lexicon ever since. Something For Everybody, Devo’s first studio album in 20 years, is the result of a massive satirical marketing campaign: The band used focus groups and public polls to determine the track listing, album artwork, and even the now-blue color of its signature energy domes. more at www.avclub.com
