Featured Review from Oh My Rockness
May 18, 2012In a perfect world, M. Ward is listened to on a backyard porch overlooking the Bayou on a hot day, a cold jug of Mississippi Mud in one hand and a fishing rod in the other. Strangely though, M. Ward is from Portland and not Baton Rouge. With a raspy croon, M. Ward spins dusty Americana yarns with help from his acoustic guitar, trusty harmonica, and a tin-pan alley piano.

Featured Review from ChicagoInnerview
May 15, 2012Pop music would sound vastly different today if not for the sonic innovations of Jamaica. Over a half-century-long career as a singer, songwriter, and producer, Lee “Scratch” Perry has presided over pivotal chapters in Jamaican musical history, dating all the way back to reggae’s first stirrings as an outgrowth of ska and rocksteady. In the 1970s Perry ran the fabled backyard studio Black Ark (the suspicious destruction of which cemented Perry’s reputation for erratic and cantankerous behavior), where he produced tunes for Bob Marley and the Wailers, among others. During this era, Perry’s experiments at the mixing desk helped spawn the druggy, effects-laden reggae subgenre known as dub, presaging the vibrant remix aesthetic that has since transformed modern music production. The 76-year-old legend remains as prolific as ever, racking up recent collaborations ranging from the inspired (Keith Richards, The Orb) to the inexplicable (Andrew W.K.). Featured Review from The Onion A.V. Club
May 04, 2012Peelander-Z enhances its super-crude punk with claims to be from space, an assertion that’s bolstered by ridiculous, color-coded alien costumes. The members’ names—Peelander-Yellow, Peelander-Green, and Peelander-Red (former member Peelander-Blue apparently had to return to the Peelander Planet to assume his royal duties in 2008)—speak to the theatrical underpinnings of the band’s musical aesthetic, but it’s hard to tell if everyone is actually in on the joke. more at avclub.com

May 10, 2012“Last year, Seattle expat Reggie Watts performed in front of a sold-out Madison Square Garden in his adopted NYC, singing a duet with James Murphy at LCD Soundsystem’s final show. But being a soul crooner is just a side gig for Watts; his main bag these days is a brand of loopy, improvisational musical comedy that has landed him gigs as illustrious as opening for Conan O’Brien on the “Legally Prohibited From Being Funny on Television Tour.” Watts will bust you up laughing, but his looped-on-the-fly beatboxing and a capella is serious bizness.”

May 09, 2012For Brooklyn-based artist Reggie Watts, who rocks a giant ‘fro and matching full thick beard, his act is as unique as his look. The former frontman of progressive Seattle rock outfit Maktub gained fame when his short on CollegeHumor, “What About Blowjobs?”, went viral. He earned further recognition when Conan O’Brien hand-selected him as an opening act on his 2010 North American Tour and as his musical guest for several episodes of his television series. Watts’ alternative performance style — combining comedy, music, vocals, and beatboxing in completely improvised shows — delights and excites crowds. more at chicagoinnerview.com
