May 18, 2012“Norwegian songstress Ane Brun may best be described to American audiences as the thinking-Scandinavian-man’s Dolly Parton. Brun’s blissful vocals evoke the innocence and clarity of a wide-eyed ingenue, but her insightful lyrics dispel any charges of coyness or naivete. Changing of the Seasons (2008) was an impressive affair and more accessible than 2005’s A Temporary Dive (whose darkness was perhaps the result of her jam sessions with fellow Scandinavians a-ha).

Featured Review from ChicagoInnerview
May 15, 2012Pop music would sound vastly different today if not for the sonic innovations of Jamaica. Over a half-century-long career as a singer, songwriter, and producer, Lee “Scratch” Perry has presided over pivotal chapters in Jamaican musical history, dating all the way back to reggae’s first stirrings as an outgrowth of ska and rocksteady. In the 1970s Perry ran the fabled backyard studio Black Ark (the suspicious destruction of which cemented Perry’s reputation for erratic and cantankerous behavior), where he produced tunes for Bob Marley and the Wailers, among others. During this era, Perry’s experiments at the mixing desk helped spawn the druggy, effects-laden reggae subgenre known as dub, presaging the vibrant remix aesthetic that has since transformed modern music production. The 76-year-old legend remains as prolific as ever, racking up recent collaborations ranging from the inspired (Keith Richards, The Orb) to the inexplicable (Andrew W.K.). May 14, 2012While Active Child has already achieved a respectable repertoire, the best is still yet to come from Pat Grossi. Only a couple EPs and one full-length exist for him. He’s a rookie. A rookie with a jaw-dropping vocal range, skills on the harp, and an ear for the cinematic. Read more about Active Child at HEAVEmedia.com

May 04, 2012The solo recording project of L.A.-based Pat Grossi, Active Child brings a glassy beauty to the hazy sounds of contemporary synth-pop on its just-released debut, You Are All I See. The vulnerability of Grossi’s choir-honed tenor could relegate the project to the bedroom, but the dreamy, wide-open arrangements of the eponymous opener and “Johnny Belinda” are destined for greater heights—if only so the ’10s equivalent of John Hughes can have his or her own Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark. more at avclub.com

Featured Review from flavorpill
May 08, 2012“From his lowly(ish) beginnings in 2008 as a (eponymous) man and his guitar, Ty Segall has quickly established himself as a forerunner in the Bay Area garage scene, standing tall alongside bands like Thee Oh Sees and Shannon and the Clams. His 2011 release, Goodbye Bread (Drag City), was a slower lurch than his previous three albums, more Iggy Pop than the Seeds, but just as kick-ass in the way that only real rock ‘n’ roll can be. more at flavorpill.com

Featured Review from Chicago Reader
May 06, 2012San Francisco garage rocker Ty Segall is nothing if not prolific. With a no-fuss approach to the studio and a prodigious work ethic, he’s made 11 albums since 2008—and the brisk pace of his output seems to have rubbed off on his music, giving it an appealing urgency. Last year’s fantastic Goodbye Bread has a dialed-down vibe, balancing its wild howling and heavy distortion with hooky melodies and strummy acoustic guitars, but you can never predict what Segall’s next record will sound like from listening to the previous one—Hair (Drag City), released a couple of weeks ago, is an action-packed eight-song collaboration with fellow Bay Area denizen White Fence (ne Tim Presley), who shares Segall’s preference for getting shit done quickly. more at chicagoreader.com

April 30, 2012On his latest album, Faithful Man (Truth & Soul), veteran soul singer Lee Fields continues down a path that leads away from the James Brown funk of his earlier recordings and toward a hard-soul template that doesn’t privilege the sound of any single old-school artist, label, or studio. more at chicagoreader.com

April 29, 2012One of the most meteoric rises to fame last year (outside of Lana Del Rey) belonged to Abel Tesfaye, who appeared out of nowhere to release not one but three albums that somehow managed to haul the genre of saccharine R&B into the 21st century, sampling Beach House and Siouxsie along the way. more at flavorpill.com

April 22, 2012Toronto’s Great Lake Swimmers play the kind of music that practically demands an intimate, dimly lit hall, and it’s not hard to imagine them attracting a crowd that does more shushing than chattering. (Actually, I don’t have to imagine it, because not only have I seen them play, I’m also excitable, with a voice that tends to carry.) more at chicagoreader.com
