Chicago’s art scene is notoriously celebrated for its vibrant network of artist-run spaces and cutting-edge, neighborhood-driven galleries! The state is a living art exhibit waiting to be explored, so here are some of my MUST-visit galleries in Chicago!

111 S Michigan Ave - River North
The Art Institute of Chicago (AIC) is one of the city’s oldest, largest, and one of the most iconic art museums in the U.S.! Located in Grant Park along River North, the museum permanently houses nearly 30,000 works of art spanning thousands of years of art movements and culture around the world. Come by and view famous collections by Artist legends, Van Gogh, Monet, Claude, Georgia O’Keeffe, and more! I really recommend the AIC for those wanting to get into the art scene, look at the history of art, and get an up-close look at iconic works!

220 E Chicago Ave - Magnificent Mile
The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago (MCA Chicago) is one of the largest contemporary art museums in the U.S. and a leading center for innovative art. Just off of Chicago’s Streeterville neighborhood near the Magnificent Mile, its exhibitions feature emerging and internationally recognized artists working across a variety of mediums. I was reminded how amazing the space is at the MCA during my visit for Mike Cloud's: Wordless Obstruction exhibition. It's super cool and innovative, definitely for people who want to see more experimental art!

SMART Museum
5550 S Greenwood Ave - Hyde Park
The Smart Museum of Art is a fine arts museum of the University of Chicago, located on the university’s Hyde Park campus. The gallery was originally created to support teaching, research, and public engagement through the visual arts. The Museum’s collection contains more than 17,000 works spanning approximately 5,000 years of human creativity, including Asian, European, Modern, Contemporary, and Ancient art. I've visited the SMART Museum on many occasions, and it truly never fails to be an academic resource for students. If you enjoy beautiful outside greenery and amazing historic architecture, I highly recommend planning a visit to UChicago's campus!

The Jackson Junge Gallery is a contemporary art gallery in Chicago’s Wicker Park and Bucktown Arts District. The founders of the gallery, Laura Lee Junge and Chris Jackson, created a dedicated space to highlight local artists in the Chicago community. The gallery is committed to making art as accessible as possible to the public by providing FREE admission to all visitors. For the people who love to do a little shopping, stop by the Jackson Junge Gallery to buy a one-of-a-kind souvenir from local Chicago Artists! As an artist myself, I exhibited at the annual 10x10 show at the Gallery. All the staff are truly incredible, supportive, and the community is so welcoming! I love that the Jackson Junge Gallery creates a space to highlight local artists, it is a great community!

Just like the studio’s abbreviated name, Lemon, this creative space gives a sweet~ vibe with personal touches that encourage collaboration! I love the concept of LMN Wedge, welcoming everyone to the world of the arts! Whether it's your first time doing a workshop or for those who are experienced, everyone at the LMN Wedge is truly inspiring!

Just a walk away from UIC Campus is Woman Made Gallery (WMG), Chicago’s longest-running feminist art gallery. In Chicago's University Village neighborhood, Woman Made Gallery serves as a nonprofit exhibition and cultural center that presents contemporary art by local, national, and international artists. To those actively seeking opportunities to support the Chicago community, I definitely recommend visiting the WMG, as they are one of the leading non-profit organizations in America dedicated to advancing the work of women and nonbinary artists. I love seeing galleries that not only empower woman and the nonbinary community but also uplift their creative visions. For me, the Woman Made Gallery is a space that is so warm and takes the time to celebrate all of its featured artists!

In Chicago's Chinatown, the Chinese American Museum of Chicago (CAMOC) is one of the only museums in the Midwest dedicated to preserving, interpreting, and celebrating the history, culture, and experiences of Chinese Americans. The CAMOC serves as an important cultural institution, connecting generations through storytelling and education. This is the place to be for culturally community-oriented events as the CAMOC offers book talks, artists' workshops, and special performances to bring Chicagoans together! Recently, I visited the CAMOC for the artist talk, Hallucinating Hieroglyphs: The Visual Language of Martin Wong. Seeing the Museum's dedication to preserving history and culture was such a rich experience! Everyone is always ready to help and knowledgeable, it is the perfect destination for history enthusiasts, students, and families looking to learn more about Chinese culture!

Located in Chicago’s West Town art district, the Volume Gallery is dedicated to blurring the boundaries of what we traditionally think of as fine art, craft, architecture, and design. As soon as you walk into the gallery, the ambiance of the installations is a one-of-a-kind experience. From the choice of lighting to the composition of the objects, everything has intention and is super detailed. It has become nationally recognized for showcasing material-driven practices across disciplines, representing architects, artists, and designers. If you’re looking for art galleries specializing in objects like ceramics, fiber, glass, furniture, sculpture, and funky forms, Volume is definitely the place for you! The Volume Gallery is easily one of the most interesting spaces in Chicago, because nothing ever stays the same. If you're looking for an intimate, exclusive experience, I highly suggest that you plan a visit!

The Kavi Gupta is truly a transformative experience that allows its visitors to use all their senses to feel an exhibition. I really encourage stopping by for the Kavi Gupta's immersive qualities!

GRAY Chicago is another one of Chicago’s most influential contemporary art galleries and among the largest running commercial galleries in America. The gallery represents a distinguished roster of artists working across painting, sculpture, photography, installation, and mixed media. For those who are always on the hunt for new emerging artists, GRAY Chicago is definitely a gallery to watch for new inspiration! With its tall ceilings, white walls, and windows high above for indirect natural light, I recommend it for those actively searching for a more aesthetic modern romantic space!
